The Golden Spice: Turmeric (Part 2: Skincare)

This colder season we are diving into can be a little less forgiving to our skin this time of year. Just as our ancestors did hundreds of years ago, we should follow their lead with using mother nature as one of our closest allies when it comes to skincare. Turmeric, has been linked to healing properties and cosmetic benefits around the world for centuries. It’s main compound, curcumin, is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potency, which is where it stands out to us in skin care awareness in a few major areas.

Aids In Healing

Turmeric has many natural remedies and preventative skincare properties, but one of its more potent realities is in it’s healing attributes. Its antiseptic properties save on healing time, and provide a shorter window for scarring to occur. According to Science Direct, a study was done that showed curcumin to decrease the body’s natural response to cutaneous wounds, such as inflammation and oxidation. For all the mothers out there chasing their playful kids around the house, this might come handy more often than not. Its power in healing burns, wounds, and scars will have everybody keeping this powerful plant in stock.

Take a few teaspoons of turmeric powder, yogurt and lemon juice, and you’ve got yourself your own scar-erasing concoction! Burn wounds? Simply add some turmeric to aloe vera gel, and apply. Make sure to get the non-alcohol kind, so it doesn’t dry out your wound (it needs to stay hydrated throughout the healing process).

Helps Reduce Oily Skin

Turmeric is a trusty side kick when our skin becomes more oily than normal. We’ve all been there, but sometimes those face wipes just don’t make the cut. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties will be a saving grace to aid in eliminating breakouts, or decreasing them tremendously. Say goodbye to clogged pores, and dead skin! Our Raw Honey Cleanser with Charcoal contains turmeric and was developed specifically for oily or problematic skin with this in mind. Our Oily Starter Set is the complete package for regulating oil production and getting breakouts under control. The beautiful ladies over at Replenish: The Spa Co-op, use this product to help their clients achieve enviable complexions. They graced us with their presence this month to share some additional insight on keeping that healthy glow, and also making time for ourselves. Check out that video here. They always remind us how important it is to practice self-love and self-care and “in the midst of city life, find peace”.

Evens Skin Tones

This one is an easy one to resonate with because we’re all tired of those dark spots! Turmeric is a key player when it comes to ancient beauty rituals for lightening and brightening the skin, and is an organic partner in crime in purifying and polishing our largest organ. Turmerics’ potent antioxidant effects come into large play here. Not only does it promote cell turnover, but it slows down cell damage offering a more youthful look by reducing wrinkles. It also protects skin against all the outside forces outside of our control, like environmental stressors. Pollution has been shown in studies to actually inhibit your skin from repair, so the more turmeric the better. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties also reduces pigmentation, and evens out the skin tone. Young Indian women have also been known to use turmeric in their face wash every day for its illuminating effect (and not to mention their smooth and flawless skin they’re known for). We recommend diluting it with water, and giving yourself a spritz throughout the day to mirror these glowing effects. Turmeric has also been known to lighten stretch marks (topical application), so calling all moms-to-be, or anyone with similar skin fatigue, this botanical beauty gives us a new addiction.

SENSITIVE SKIN

Turmeric can work for any skin type, but it’s even more endearing for being a gentle force as well. Not every plant or herb can stand tall and raise their tendril for having a sensitive side, but believe it or not, turmeric is the new boyfriend you never had. It’s really never (ever) a bad thing to have a gentle ally on your side, so hold this one close! It’s natural soothing powers favor the more reactive and delicate skin types, and we're sure to use its mineral and antioxidant rich influences to aid in epidermal combat for that skin that needs a little bit of extra love.

Turmeric's Indian Heritage

Not only is it an integral part of Indian cuisine and medicine, but also Indian traditions! This one isn’t hard to figure out for anyone that has been lucky enough to attend one of those lavishly ornate ceremonies of nuptial bliss. The idyllic Haldi ceremony (meaning “yellow on the body”) is observed during Hindu wedding celebrations, where the turmeric paste is applied to the bride and grooms' arms, legs, and face to give it that timeless golden glow. This romantic activity makes the couple glow, and is a bit of an erotic ceremony. It’s also known to ward off negative spirits, and bring them happiness, wealth and offspring! Turmeric has forces that go beyond just the physical world.
